I'm a former Lowe's Tool Dept. Manager and tool junkie. I've since changed my role but Tool World is still where my heart is at. Regarding quality it's hit or miss. Stay away from any gadget tools or multi tools and you'll do fine. Around Xmas is when all the garbage comes out of the woodwork but our regular stock tools are good.

I own a whole mixed bag of tools ranging from Harbor Freight to Snap-On and use many of them regularly. My Kobalt ratchets, sockets, impact sockets and wrenches have lasted. The warranty is great but if you shop there regularly, find 'The Tool Man' in your store and become friendly with them (hint: it may not be an actual tool dept associate!). You dont need to exchange Christmas cards with them but this connection makes returns and exchanges so much easier on both sides.

The Customer Service desk is often a crap shoot so take the broken item to the tool guys, find the replacement, and have them call it up front to CS for you. That way the kid at the CS desk doesn't have to think too hard. Another thing to know is that almost every Kobalt tool from a table saw down to individual sockets have the item # on them.

In the case of sockets, you don't need to bring in the whole set, find the item number and just exchange the one you need. Kobalt tools all have what we call a 'blanket return authorization (RA)'. Basically the store gets automatic credit for these returns. Another dirty little secret that I'm personally not happy about is that Lowe's is going to start carrying Craftsman. I'm not sure why since Lowe's won the tool battle against Sears. I'm sure the symbiotic relationship we have with Stanley/Black and Decker (DeWalt, Porter Cable, etc) has something to do with it. We'll see where that all goes.
